Dilli Boys bid adieu to the Kotla with a thumping win against Punjab

On a hot Friday afternoon, the Delhi Daredevils brigade, dressed in different color, landed a knock-out blow on a struggling Kings XI Punjab team, as the hosts brought an end to the Delhi leg of their campaign.

The lavender instead of the blue was meant to be for raising cancer awareness, but amidst the celebrations for this noble cause, there was a little bit of luck that went Delhi’s way, as captain JP Duminy won the toss on a two paced wicket, and put the opposition to bat.

If the last encounter was Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) was about the masterclass of Yuvraj Singh, this one will surely be remembered for wily Zaheer Khan’s Delhi debut. The left-arm pacer’s initial burst crippled the Punjab batting, as he saw the back of local boy Virender Sehwag and Manan Vohra in no-time. After Zaheer’s early breakthroughs, the match never seemed to be going in favour of the Kings, as regular fall of wickets crippled them. At one stage, the KXIP scoreboard read: 45/6 with more than half their innings to go. The wrecker-in-chief of the KXIP batting was Nathan Coulter-nile, who, with his bounce and movement picked up 4 for 20 in his quota of four overs. Even a good parternship between Axar Patel and David Miller couldn’t save Punjab from the ignominy of defeat, as the Kings could post only 118 on the board.

The chase was never going to be challenging, as an in-form Shreyas Iyer took the attack to the opposition right from the start. Aiding him was Mayank Agarwal, who after a lean patch, seemed in perfect flow. The openers put up an opening stand of 106 runs before Iyer fell to Shardul Thakur. Both the openers’ attacking half centuries ensured that Delhi chased down the runs in 13.5 overs, with the loss of just 1 wicket.

Delhi now look like strong contenders for the title, and after the disappointment of last year, it will be such a joy to look forward to 2016’s opening game being played at the Kotla - a privilege that the Dilli Boys have to earn right now. How? By winning this year’s IPL!
