Resurgent Daredevils win their second on the trot

A buoyant Delhi Daredevils led by their dynamic skipper, JP Duminy completed a rather successful sojourn by winning their second consecutive away game, against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Vizag on Saturday.

Post winning the toss, our skipper decided to bat first on a fresh strip under hot and humid conditions in one of South India’s major port cities. If it was Mayank Agarwal who stole the show in the previous victory against Kings XI Punjab, Saturday belonged to the young Shreyas Iyer, who with his skills, put up a display of a range of shots all around the park. The Dilli Boy from Mumbai blasted his way to 60 off 40 balls, with three boundaries and five sixes. It was that kind of an innings which very few could have expected from a 20-year old facing the wily Praveen Kumar and the pace of Dale Steyn.

Assisting Iyer to his first IPL fifty, was none other than captain JP Duminy, who has made scoring runs somewhat of a habit lately. Duminy put up a 78-run partnership for the second wicket with Iyer, and notched up yet another half century. Duminy’s steady 54 ensured that the Daredevils were always insulated from a batting collapse, and that a platform for the likes of Angelo Mathews and Kedar Jadhav was available to be utilized. An end innings burst from the duo of Jadhav and Mathews, saw the Daredevils post a respectable target of 167 runs.

Coming out to bat, the Sunrisers’ openers, Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner took liking towards the Delhi bowlers early, putting up 50 runs in the first six overs. What looked like a possible disappointment for the Daredevils in the crowd, turned into instant delight, as a magical Duminy dismissed Dhawan off the first ball of the seventh over. There was double joy waiting round the corner, as off the third ball of the very same over, Duminy got rid of Warner, while the latter closed the face of his bat a tad early. As the ball ballooned into Duminy’s hands, there was a loud cry of C’mon, from the Delhi captain – apne munde had struck!

After the openers’ dismissals, the match remained firmly in Delhi’s grip. A constant fall in wickets ensured that even a counterattack from Ravi Bopara wasn’t enough, as the Dilli Boys sealed the deal with a 4 run victory over the team from Hyderabad.

While Duminy took away the Man of the Match award with a stellar performance of 4/17 and 54 runs, the victory was also due to some superb out-fielding, especially by Agarwal and some fabulous death bowling by Australia’s Nathan Coulter-nile.

As the Daredevils return to Delhi for their Monday encounter against Kolkata, expect a full-house and lots of noise. There are some games to be won, and a championship to be conquered.
