DC vs MI | Delhi Capitals win high-scoring thriller after record score

Delhi Capitals (DC) made it back-to-back wins at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, beating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 10 runs, further boosting their IPL 2024 playoffs qualification chances.

Jake Fraser-McGurk’s quickfire fifty along with Tristan Stubbs’ rampant 48* helped the Rishabh Pant-led Capitals score 257, a franchise-record score. Rasikh Dar stole the limelight in the run chase with his three-for as the Capitals picked up their fifth win of the season.

The MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss at Qila Kotla and elected to bowl first. Kumar Kushagra returned to our team while Protea pacer Lizaad Williams made his IPL debut.

Jake Fraser-McGurk took centrestage from the very first ball. The Australian batter smashed 19 runs off the first over, before hitting two fours and a six against Jasprit Bumrah in the second to get us off to a flyer.

While Abhishek Porel stood at the other end, Fraser-McGurk continued his merry way, scoring the fastest fifty of IPL 2024, needing just 15 balls.

Regardless of who came on to bowl, Fraser-McGurk relentlessly hit them to the boundary as DC scored 92/0 by the end of the powerplay.

Porel, on the other hand, was at his best after the powerplay, notching 16 runs against Hardik Pandya. The duo brought up a 100-run partnership. However, Fraser-McGurk was dismissed the next over after a whirlwind 84 off 27, where he struck at 311.11!

In the 10th over, Porel was also knocked over for 36 off 27.

Shai Hope, meanwhile, took over the impetus of scoring freely. He tonked three sixes against the spinners while hitting a couple against pacer Luke Wood. However, he was soon dismissed after a 41-run blitzkrieg.

Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs, entrusted with the closing act, lived up to the billing, once again. Our skipper smashed two fours and two sixes, including a helicopter shot that captivated our hearts.

Stubbs, meanwhile, stole the show in the 18th over with five fours and a six, taking on Luke Wood with some nifty ramps and powerful pulls.

The Protea smasher continued his “PlayStation batting” in the final two overs to take Delhi Capitals to 257/4. Stubbs remained unbeaten at 48 off 25 balls.

Delhi Capitals bowlers also made a strong statement early on in the innings. Khaleel Ahmed bowled three overs on the trot, picking two crucial wickets. Our pacer first got the better of the dangerous Rohit Sharma.

Mukesh Kumar, on the other hand, dismissed Ishan Kishan on the first ball of his spell. Suryakumar Yadav, MI’s swashbuckling batter, looked in prime form early on. However, Khaleel once again answered the call, getting the prized scalp of SKY.

Rasikh Dar came on as the Impact Sub in the match and had a massive impact on the game. He continued his good form from the last match, where he picked up three wickets.

In his second over, Rasikh dismissed the hard-hitting MI skipper Pandya, four runs short of his fifty. A couple of balls later, the Kashmir-based speedster got rid of a potentially dangerous Nehal Wadhera.

Tilak Varma and Tim David kept MI in the run chase with their explosive batting. It remained a pulsating game until the end but the DC bowlers held their nerve in the final five overs.

Mukesh trapped David LBW in the 18th over while Mohammad Nabi, the next batter in, fell to Rasikh Dar. It was Rasikh’s second three-for in a row. Tilak Varma and Piyush Chawla’s wickets in the final over restricted MI to 247/9.

Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 257/4 in 20 overs (Jake Fraser-McGurk 84, Tristan Stubbs 48; Jasprit Bumrah 1/35) beat Mumbai Indians (Tilak Varma 63; Rasikh Dar 3/34, Mukesh Kumar 3/59) by 10 runs.
