IYER SAVES THE DAY

Scores his second ton of the season to help Mumbai salvage a draw vs Punjab.

Going into the final day’s play against Mumbai, Punjab would have harboured hope of a rate outright win over the defending champions after forcing them to follow on.

But the 41-times champions proved why they are one of the most successful team in the Ranji Trophy history as they kept their calm to salvage a draw and finish at the top of the Group A standings with 30 points.

The game had little significance in deciding the final standings in Group A as Mumbai were assured of a top spot and Punjab were never in the running for a knock-out berth.

However, Mumbai would have definitely not liked to go into the knock-outs with an outright loss in their final league encounter and Shreyas Iyer ensured that their were no slip ups in the second innings.

The 22-year-old, who was forced to open the innings in the absence of second regular opener, scored patient ton to anchor the innings as Mumbai ended the day on 227 for 4.
