NEW DELHI, July 5: Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag and pace bowler Umesh Yadav have both been picked for the Indian team’s tour of Sri Lanka to play five one-day internationals and a T20 international from July 21 to August 7. They had both been rested for India’s last one-day series – the Asia Cup in Bangladesh.
Sehwag has no fitness concerns now and is all geared up for the Sri Lanka tour. “I played nearly all matches (for Delhi Daredevils) in the Indian Premier League and there is no fitness issue now. The tour of Sri Lanka will also help me in preparing for the Twenty20 World Cup to be held there,” he said.
The 33-year-old Sehwag has scored 8090 runs in 245 one-day internationals and 340 runs in 16 T20 internationals while Umesh Yadav, 24, has taken 16 wickets in 15 one-day internationals so far and has not played a T20 international. Both were in good form for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League 2012, Sehwag making 495 runs and Umesh Yadav claiming 19 wickets.
All-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was part of the Indian team that played the Asia Cup was left out, given that left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan returned to the squad, too. Umesh Yadav’s fast bowling partner Varun Aaron has returned from injury and may have to wait a bit before returning to the India squad.
