Kesavan’s Corner: Gayle picks up 12th Man of the Match award in IPL

CHENNAI, May 18:  Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Chris Gayle picked up his 12th Man of the Match award in IPL for his blazing 128 not out  in the DLF Indian Premier League match against Delhi Daredevils at the Ferozshah Kotla in New Delhi on Thursday. With 706 runs, Chris Gayle is the highest run scorer in IPL 2012 ahead of Gautam Gambhir (546), Ajinkya Rahane (541), Shikhar Dhawan (538) and Virender Sehwag (484).

Gayle is the only player to score 100 or more sixes (127 sixes) in IPL. He now has 101 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore. With 13 sixes, he equalled Brendon McCullum’ record for the most sixes in an innings.  

Gayle’s 128 not out (62 balls, seven fours, 13 sixes) was

  • The first century by any player against Delhi Daredevils in IPL
  • The highest score in IPL 2012
  • The highest score by a Royal Challengers batsman in IPL

The 409 runs made by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils is the second highest match aggregate in IPL 2012 and the ninth highest match aggregate in IPL.

The 204-run partnership in 17.4 overs for the unbroken second wicket between Gayle and Virat Kohli is the second best in IPL. Kohli made his 12th half-century in 107 T20 matches

Ross Taylor (55, 26 balls, seven fours, two sixes) made his first half-century for Delhi Daredevils. It was his 16 th half-century in 133 T20 matches.
