Daredevil Sehwag sweeps Cricinfo awards
Delhi Daredevil’s icon player and captain Virender Sehwag's match-winning unbeaten double century (201 not out) against Sri Lanka has been chosen as the best Test performance in batting for 2008 by Cricinfo.
Sehwag also won a number of titles in the Statsguru Awards based on detailed data analyses of the year's performances. In both Tests and ODIs he was the batsman with the highest strike-rate in the year, and the one with the highest boundary percentage.
According to Tony Greig, "It was a breathtaking double-century and it came against a remarkable spin attack. Sehwag is, and will be for a while, the most dangerous batsman in world cricket." Greig was one of the jury members and the others included Ian Chappell, Sanjay Manjrekar, David Lloyd, Ramiz Raja, Daryll Cullinan, and five of Cricinfo's senior editors.
South African pacer Dale Steyn's five for 67 at the MCG, which helped South Africa win a series in Australia for the first time was the best bowling performance in Tests in 2008.
The winning ODI performances were both from Sri Lanka. The batting performance was Sanath Jayasuriya's 125 off 114 balls and Ajantha Mendis' 6 for 13 against India in the same match.
Sachin Tendulkar was a favourite with Cricinfo's readers, winning in the Test and ODI batting categories in the Reader’s Choice category.
