Jan 31: Another Mishra – Vikas Mishra – joins Daredevils

NEW DELHI, Jan 30: Delhi Daredevils now have a second ‘Mishra’. After Amit Mishra, a new Delhi spinner, Vikas Mishra, just 17, has joined the Delhi Daredevils ranks this season.

It has been a remarkable rise for young Vikas Mishra, who was signed up by Daredevils for IPL-3. The Delhi boy, who made his first-class debut only in December 2009 has since then turned out to be the spinning sensation with 24 wickets in just four first-class games.

Mishra, who 18 months ago, was still playing Under-16 cricket, is also excited about playing in the team which includes his idol, the New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori. “Vettori is my idol and my role model. It is going to be fantastic to train under him. His tips will be invaluable and it is something I am really looking forward to,” he added.

After a rather sedate debut against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, where he took two wickets, Vikas quickly took his first career five-wicket haul with a five for 112 in 43 overs in the only innings he bowled against a strong Tamil Nadu line-up in the quarter-final, which Delhi won on the basis of first-innings lead.

In the very next match, the semi-final against Mumbai at the Brabourne Stadium, Mishra bowled 30.1 overs, the most for any Delhi bowler in the innings and took four for 89. In the second innings, Mishra got his best career-haul with a six for 49, but still could not stop Mumbai from moving into the final on the strength of their first innings lead.

His latest exploits came on his Duleep Trophy debut for North Zone, where he was used as the stock bowler and took four wickets in each of the two innings against West Zone at Rajkot. But once again West on the basis of their first innings lead – they scored 769 – moved into the final.

So in three Ranji matches, he has 16 wickets and eight in his only Duleep Trophy appearance!

The Daredevils chief operating officer, Amrit Mathur is pleased with the youngsters performance. “He is a talented youngster and we went in for him on the basis of his Ranji Trophy performance. Despite being so young he has shown great maturity and will be a valuable asset. He has a long way to go and could have a great future.”
