Delhi Daredevils pick paceman Wayne Parnell in IPL auction
Mumbai, January 19: Delhi Daredevils fulfilled their bowling needs by picking up the hugely talented Wayne Parnell in the IPL auction in Mumbai on Tuesday. Parnell, the 21-year-old from Port Elizabeth, was picked up Daredevils for US $ 610,000 following a fierce battle with Deccan Chargers, who were also keen on the South African youngster.
A left-arm fast-medium pace bowler, Parnell is a handy left-hand batsman. Parnell becomes the second South African after AB De Villiers to join the Delhi Daredevils team.
Mr. B Vanchi, Director of GMR Sports, who led the Delhi Daredevils’ bidding team, said, “Our team was complete except that we wanted a pace bowler and our focus was clearly on Wayne Parnell and we got him at a decent price. We have been consistent in all auctions to for value buys."
Parnell, former captain of the South African Under-19 team, made his T20 debut for South Africa against Australia at Brisbane and a little over two weeks later, he made his ODI debut against Australia at Perth. Last week he made his Test debut against England at Johannesburg.
Parnell has 22 wickets in nine ODIs and has twice taken five-wicket hauls and in eight T20 Internationals he has 11 wickets with four for 13 as his best.
Parnell was the captain of the South Africa team for the 2008 U-19 Cricket World Cup and was the highest wicket-taker with 18 wickets at 8.38 per wicket.
Parnell was selected for the South African squad for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England and had an excellent tournament. He took nine wickets at 13.22 with an economy rate of less than six. Against England he took figures of three for 14. Against the West Indies he was adjudged Man-of-the-match after taking four for 13.
Parnell also won the Golden Ball for being the leading wicket taker in the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 with 11 wickets.
Earlier in the trading window, Delhi Daredevils picked up Moises Henriques and gave Owais Shah and Manoj Tiwary to Kolkata.
The other sign-ups this season have been Kedar Jadhav, R Jesuraj, Joginder Singh, Farman Ahmed, Manan Sharma, Sarabjit Singh Ladda, Sarandeep Singh and Vikas Mishra.
