Sehwag, Karthik smash Wayamba, Daredevils win by 50 runs
Delhi Daredevils bounced back from their shock defeat in the first match to outplay Wayamba Eleven by 50 runs in their second and final match of the first stage of the league competition in the Airtel Champions League T20 on Sunday night.
Faced with elimination in case of a second defeat Daredevils turned in a great all-round performance to first score 170 for five in 20 overs and then holding back Wayamba to just 120 for seven in their 20 overs.
Virender Sehwag, who stayed at the wicket till past the 15th over, scored 66 runs and was adjudged the Man of the Match.
From the organisers point of view, an Indian team doing well augured well for the tournament and curators at Ferozeshah Kotla heaved a sigh of relief as Daredevils lead by Virender Sehwag mauled the Wayamba attack and also reversed the pattern of low scoring at the venue.
The performance of the Australian pace-bowling duo of Dirk Nannes and Glenn McGrath effectively shut Wayamba out of the game early in the chase but the foundation was laid by a brilliant display of power hitting by
After Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to bat, his view was to get about 130-140. But Delhi began slowly with just three runs in first three overs including an opening-over maiden. Then in the fourth over Isuru Udana got hit for three boundaries and the floodgates opened.
When Tilakaratne Dilshan and Gautam Gambhir departed in quick succession, vice captain Dinesh Karthik walked in. They sent the crowds into raptures with their shot making.
Sehwag (66) and Dinesh Karthik (61) helped their side reach 170 for five. The two put on 67 runs during their partnership.
When they were unable to hit, their took ones and twos and kept the scoreboard moving.
Ultimately a call for a single cost Sehwag his wicket but Karthik ensured the innings never lost momentum. Karthik then smashed Ajantha Mendis for three consecutive sixes over the leg side in the 19th over.
In their last ten overs, Delhi slammed 104 runs.
Facing a target of 171 for a win, the match was almost decided when Dirk Nannes, Glenn McGrath, Amit Mishra reduced Wayamba top order to reduce them to a hapless 36 for 5. McGrath playing his first game since the end of IPL-1 showed that he was as classy as ever. Nannes had his best figures of four for 24 and McGrath ended with two for 20.
Delhi were also very good on the field. Dilshan sprinted all the way from mid-off to his right and took a tumbling catch to send back Maharoof. Jayawardene scored a half-century but went in vain. His innings featured two clean strikes over the rope and a reverse sweep for four. He then holed out to long-off to hand Nannes his fourth wicket.
