Gambhir unveils Champions League Trophy in students presence

New Delhi: India batsman Gautam Gambhir on Monday unveiled the diamond-studded trophy that would be handed to the winner of USD six million Champions League Twenty20 tournament, commencing from October 8.

More than 1,000 students were present at the Special Assembly organized for the function. The day also marked the end of a five-day Coaching Clinic for students and members of the Delhi Daredevils Members Club.

Gambhir, captain of the Indian Premier League’s Delhi Daredevils team, unveiled the 1.5-foot tall trophy with his teammates and scores of children in attendance during a brief function at a city school.

Gambhir is an alumni of Modern School as also, Rajat Bhatia, who were both mobbed by the students.

Besides the trophy, winner of the 12-team tournament would also receive USD 2.5 million prize money, while share of the runner-up side would be USD 1.3 million. “I can assure the supporters that the Delhi team would leave no stone unturned to put up good performance in the tournament,” Gambhir said.

“It is a great moment for me to come for this to my own school and unveil the trophy,” said Gambhir, who later presented a bat autographed by the team to the Principal Mrs. Lata Vaidyanathan.

Delhi Daredevils coach David Saker, paceman Dirk Nannes, leg-spinner Amit Mishra, wicketkeeper and vice captain of Daredevils Dinesh Karthik, Owais Shah and Rajat Bhatia were among others present on the occasion.

GMR Sports COO Amrit Mathur and other GMR Sports officials were also present.

Besides Delhi, IPL II winner Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad and runner-up Royal Challengers Bangalore would be the other Indian teams in the tournament that ends on October 23.
