
DU Force lift Delhi Daredevils Soccer Mania Cup
NEW DELHI, July 1: In a thrilling final that ended in a nerve tingling penalty shootout, DU Force beat Red Bull 7 to lift the inaugural Delhi Daredevils Soccer Mania 2009 at the Feroz Shah Kotla grounds in the capital here today.
The finals of the five-day long 32 team contest went into a penalty shoot-out after the two teams finished tied, post two goalless sessions. DU Force triumphed by a 2-0 margin in the shoot-out.
For their splendid showing, the winning team pocketed Rs 50,000, while the runners-up had to settle for Rs 25,000. The two losing semi-finalists got to take home Rs 5,000 each.
The four team ladies tournament resulted in a clash between Eves Soccer Club and Centerline FC. In a situation similar to the men’s finals the two teams went into a penalty shoot-out where Eves Soccer Club emerged victors by a margin of 3-2. Eves as the winners were richer by Rs 10,000. Centerline got to take home Rs5,000.
The prizes were given away by Dr SS Sareen of the DDCA and among the dignitaries present were Delhi Daredevils leg spinner Amit Mishra and Navneet Khichi of Adidas.
The tournament organised by GMR Group was sponsored by Hero Honda , Adidas, Coke, Fever and SMS GupShup.
There were a number of exciting prizes given away including the ‘Golden Boot Award’ which was bagged by Prem of Super FC. Prem finished with a tally of 11 goals. The ‘Best Goal Keeper’ award was pocketed by Bhanu of Red Bull 7 while Yogesh of Du Force was declared the ‘Player of the Tournament’.
